If you’re looking for some inspiration on how to decorate your porch for winter, you’re in the right place! In this blog post, we will discuss 5 must-haves for winter porch decor. These are key elements that you don’t want to miss when creating your winter wonderland. So without further ado, let’s get started!
WINTER PORCH COLOR SCHEMES
Generally, if you are decorating your porch for winter and not just Christmas, the color scheme tends to be a bit more neutral. White, silver, and gold are popular colors as well as shades of black and green.
It’s a good idea to pick one or two main colors and then use other shades of that color around the porch for balance. For example, if you choose white as your primary color, you can use black or greens in secondary accents such as pillows, or ribbons.
You can easily incorporate green into the decor by using greenery such as pine branches, winter greens, evergreen trees (real or fake), etc. Use porch pots to add winter porch decor and greenery to increase your home’s curb appeal.
SNOWFLAKES WORK FOR CHRISTMAS AND ALL OF WINTER
One of the best winter porch decorating ideas to incorporate on your porch is to use snowflakes. They are a timeless symbol of winter and you can use them as part of your decor. You can make paper snowflakes, hang them from the ceiling or walls, or even use giant foam snowflakes! I also used these lighted Snowflake Strands on my front porch ceiling for a magical touch.
HOW CAN I DECORATE MY PORCH FOR WINTER?
The beauty of decorating a winter front porch is that you can find elements from nature that are cost-effective because they cost you nothing! Take a walk around the neighborhood to find natural elements to use on your porches such as pine cones, curly willow branches, or evergreen branches.
LAYERING DOOR MATS
A really fun way to add to your wintry display is by using multiple door mats. Choose one that has some texture, like a coir mat, and layer it with a holiday-themed rug to make your porch look festive!
I chose this black and white striped rug to layer with a doormat with a saying. I chose a door mat with a wintry saying so I could keep it up past Christmas. This is my favorite rug shop I’ve seen because you can easily customize the sizes of the mats to your own home. There have been so many times when I’ve found a rug that I love but it’s too small or too large.
WINTER LIGHTING FOR A MAGICAL FRONT PORCH
Adding festive lighting is one of the BEST and easiest ways to make your winter front porch inviting. Adding strings of lights around the entryway, columns or windows is a great way to create an ambiance. You don’t have to be traditional and just use white or warm-hued lights either! You can add fun colored lighting for a pop of color on your porch.
LIGHTED TREES BRING A WINTRY FEEL
I wanted to add some fun lighted trees to my porch this winter and I’m so glad I did! Lighted trees can bring a wintry, festive feel to your front porch. They are available in all different shapes and sizes and you can find them in various colors too. Place them around your entryway or on the corners of your porch for an extra magical effect.
Lighted Birch trees are a great thing to add to your winter porch decor because birch trees are perfect for the winter season. You could even add some chopped-up birch trees on your winter porch in a pile (or in a porch pot) for a beautiful rustic look.
LIGHTED HANGING SNOWFLAKES MAKE YOUR PORCH FEEL MAGICAL
Creating a winter front porch doesn’t have to be expensive. You can make your own hanging snowflakes out of paper or fabric and hang them from the porch railings or from above your entryway. These are a great way to add some extra sparkle and fun to your winter-season decor.
I wanted to have my winter front porch have an enchanting feel so I decided to add some lighted hanging snowflakes.
HOUSE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS CAN BE USED ALL WINTER
Christmas lights don’t have to just be for Christmas! Adding small strands of house Christmas lights to your porch railing or around your doorframe can add a festive feel that will last all winter. For an extra touch, you can also hang them from tree branches.
We purchased some color-changing C9 Lights that can be controlled by an app! It’s super fun to put them up for Halloween and then be able to leave them up all winter. I can change the colors of the lights to fit the holiday or season with the press of a button (literally!)
This is an easy way to bring some cheery and fun vibes to your winter decor without having to invest in too many items.
BATTERY POWERED CANDLES
Battery-powered candles are on my top 5 list of items for holiday decorations. They can be used for many different holidays and they can even be set on a timer!
I own two different brands of candlesticks and I love them both for different reasons. These candlesticks can be put on a timer to turn on and off at the same time each night. While these candlesticks have a light sensor and they turn on automatically when it gets dark outside. Just make sure the sensor is pointing outside for an accurate reading.
I love both sets but I feel like the batteries last longer with the set that can be on a timer because the light isn’t on all night.
Lanterns are perfect for a winter porch because they really bring a cozy, inviting vibe. You don’t have to invest in expensive lanterns either; you can find some inexpensive ones at your local dollar store! I highly recommend
Pathway lights are a perfect decor item for your winter porch. They are easy to install and come in a variety of styles. Stake them along the pathway to your door for a beautifully illuminated path.
PROJECTION VIDEOS FOR YOUR WINDOW
If you want to add an interactive element to your front porch, Atmos FX is the industry’s leader in holiday projection movies. Simply add a projection screen to the inside of your window and project the video onto the screen (from inside the house). The video will be visible to spectators outside!
USE PORCH FURNITURE AND ACCENT IT WITH WINTER ELEMENTS
Most likely, you have some porch furniture that you already have that you can use. If not, this is a great time to buy some new furniture that will last you year-round. This can help set the scene for your winter porch.
Once your furniture is all set up, add a cozy blanket to snuggle up in while drinking hot cocoa! The blanket can add a cozy, comforting feeling to your porch…especially if you use a faux fur blanket. Blankets are a versatile winter porch decor element that can be used inside or outside.
An easy and classic way to spruce up the front porch for winter is to add a Wreath to the front door. This is one of the easiest ways to dress up your front door. You can buy a simple wreath and add ribbons to match your decor or even hot glue some pine cones to the wreath.
Birch logs (or any logs) can be the perfect element for your porch decor that won’t cost you any money! Just collect them from a nearby park or forest. Free winter porch decor! Place the logs in an interesting way on your porch to add texture and interest!
This may be a porch decor item that is a bit harder to come by, however, if you’re able to find a wooden sled it is truly an amazing addition to your winter porch! The sled will give your winter porch that traditional winter feels. It’s one of my favorite porch decor items…too bad they are so hard to find!
VINTAGE ICE SKATES
You may be able to find an old pair of ice skates from a flea market or an antique store. These can be hung up on the porch to add a vintage flair, perfect for winter.
By incorporating these elements into your winter porch decor, you’ll have a beautiful place to relax and enjoy the winter season! Be sure to shop for items out of season…it may be easier to find them when nobody else is shopping for them.
You can purchase pillow covers for your winter porch that you can easily take off the pillow forms and store to use every year. I highly recommend Cable Knit Pillow covers that have a wintry vibe. This can really make your porch furniture a fun place to sit.
If you have window boxes, fill them with evergreens, pinecones, birch branches, pine branches and other wintry items. Place candles in the window boxes for a romantic atmosphere in the evening. This can really add life to your porch during the cold winter months.
WHAT TO PUT IN YOUR FRONT PORCH PLANTERS FOR WINTER
Planters are a great way to add some life and color to your front porch decor during the winter months. You can easily add evergreens, like boxwood or holly, for a festive look.
You can use floral foam to boost up the plants so they stick up out of the planters better. I chose to have my lighted trees in my planters.
These are just a few of the key elements you should incorporate when decorating your porch for winter. Whether you are looking to create a classic or modern look, it is important to think about the different things that will make your porch warm and inviting even on those cold winter nights. So have fun with it and be creative
